Title: Novel Biomaterials for Bone Tissue Engineering
Zengmin Xia, Max M. Villa, Changmin Hu, Drew Clearfield, Mei Wei*
Abstract
Tissue engineering is a rapidly growing new emerging interdisciplinary field, which offers tremendous promises for organ repair and regeneration. The development of skeletal tissues has become the fastest developing segment of tissue engineering due to the large demand in bone repair materials. In this talk, we will reveal a novel approach for fabrication of biomimetic apatite/collagen composite scaffolds mimicking the organic and inorganic constructions of natural bone. This approach not only renders the scaffold with biomimetic structure, but also superior mechanical properties and excellent in vitro and in vivo performances for bone tissue engineering. The mechanisms of scaffold formation will also be discussed in depth.
Biography
Dr. Mei Wei is a full professor of the Department of Materials Science and Engineering and the Department of Biomedical Engineering, and Associate Dean of School of Engineering, University of Connecticut. She is also the co-founder of a biomedical device company, OrteoPoniX LLC. Dr. Wei received her MS and Ph.D. from the Department of Materials Science and Engineering, University of New South Wales, Australia. She subsequently conducted her postdoctoral studies in Kyoto University Japan and Queensland University of Technology Australia. She joined University of Connecticut as an assistant professor in 2002. Over the last 20 years, Dr. Wei’s research has been focused on biomaterials, tissue engineering, drug delivery, biomaterial-cell interactions, and in vivo performances of biomaterials. She has served as a panel member for various programs of National Science Foundation (NSF), has acted as a reviewer for more than 30 scientific journals, and is on the editorial board for Bioceramics Development and Applications, Journal for Biomedical Materials Research: Part A, and Metallurgical and Materials Transactions A. Dr. Wei is a recipient of various awards, including Member of the Connecticut Academy of Science and Engineering (CASE), Connecticut Women of Innovation Award, University Professional excellence Award and Outstanding Department Member.
